If you find a tagged fish or tag, you need to return it to the fisheries laboratory that originally released the tagged fish. Further details on what to do can be found by clicking on the FAQ link (above). Each tag is inscribed with the name and address of the responsible Institute that released it. If you are having trouble reading the address, send the tag to your home country's fisheries laboratory- the addresses of the Institutes can be found in .

Each returned electronic tag and the otoliths (ear stones) of the tagged fish earns the sender a CASH REWARD of 40Euros (£25UK). Those people who return a tag released by CEFAS or the FRS Laboratory will be entered into an annual tag lottery with a CASH REWARD of 1500Euros (£1000UK). So it is well worth your while returning a tag! In addition, we are hoping to offer other incentives for tag returnees and details will be announced shortly.

In most cases, the electronic tags will be surgically placed inside each fish, and an external tag will be attached to the outside of each fish to alert you to the fact that there is a tag inside.

It is very important that you return the otoliths (ear stones) of the fish as well as the tag. Remember to include as many details of the capture of the fish, and the fish itself, as possible when you are returning the tag and otoliths. It is possible that your local fisheries office will be able to help you with the return, including taking out the otoliths, if you wish.
