CODYSSEY is a partnership between nine different fisheries research institutes in eight European countries. Each institute plays a key role in the project, but the roles that each institute plays are very different. The main roles of each partner are described below.

CEFAS will act as scientific coordinator for the project, principally by leading WP1. This will cover management of the tagging and behavioural databasing activities, in addition to taking overall responsibility for reporting to the EU, coordinating scientific/ project management meetings and ensuring information flow between ecosystem coordinators. In addition, CEFAS will lead WP3 (Horizontal migrations) and WP7 (Management case studies), and have involvement in WP2, WP4 and WP5.

Scientific team: David Righton (CODYSSEY Scientific coordinator), Julian Metcalfe, Olive Heffernan (Project manager), Ewan Hunter, Helen Edwards (PhD student)

IMR will be responsible for delivering the cod tagging and environmental data programme in the Barents Sea, in addition to coordinating CODYSSEY financially. Specifically, IMR will be coordinating the WP concerned with analysing and interpreting the vertical movements of cod in all ecosystems (WP4), with respect to determining the physiological limitations on vertical movement, and with respect to analysis of temporal patterns of movement as regards catchability. IMR will work closely with UiB in the supply and interpretation of data for WP6, which will build on the work conducted by IMR.

Scientific team: Kathrine Michalsen (Team leader), Anders Ferno (CODYSSEY Financial coordinator), Geir Huse

DIFRES is directly in charge of the Baltic Sea tagging programme. Aside from conducting preliminary data analysis on returned tag data from the Baltic region, DIFRES will be heavily involved in the analysis of otolith microstructure and the application of CODYSSEY results to management in WP7.

Scientific team:Stefan Neuenfeldt (team leader), Henrik Mosegaard, Jan Beyer, Niels Gerner Andersen.

Co-ordination of workpackage 5, and involvement in 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7. Conduct tagging programme in northern North Sea. Aid in environmental mapping of North Sea. Collaborate in the estimation of cod horizontal movements in the North Sea. Conduct basic analysis of DST data on vertical movements. Analyse otolith microstructure from recaptured cod in the North Sea. Supply data for IBM of vertical movement. Aid in the integration of data into management advice.

Scientific Team: Peter Wright (team leader), Francis Neat, Iain Gibb, Fiona Gibb.

MRI will be responsible for delivery of the tagging programme in Icelandic waters, and will play a large role by conducting preliminary analysis of data for provision to other partners. MRI will be taking the lead in interpretation of data of utility to fisheries managers in the Iceland/ Faroe region.

Scientific team: Vilhjalmur Thorsteinsson (team leader), Hedinn Valdimarsson, Olafur Palsson.

UiB will specifically be in charge of developing a sophisticated Individual Based Model that will be used to predict and evaluate the vertical distribution of cod in the four study ecosystems.

Scientific team: Espen Strand

IFM will be responsible for the creation, maintenance and tuning of the Geolocation database (WP2). In collaboration with other partners, IFM will develop and test geolocation queries and algorithms that will enable the rapid and effective geolocation of individuals from environmental data returned from DSTs.

Scientific team: Hans-Harald Hinrichsen (Team leader), Friedrich-W. Koester, Andreas Lehmann

FFL will be responsible for delivery of the tagging programme in Faeroe waters, and will provide data on horizontal and vertical movements of Faroese cod to MRI and UiB.

Scientific team: Petur Steingrund

IFR are an ad-hoc CODYSSEY partner, funded solely from Swedish research funding, but playing a key role in the investigations of migrations and behaviour of Baltic and North Sea cod by undertaking a tagging programme in the Baltic Sound, the Skaggerak and Kattegat and collaborating in data analysis with the other research institutes involved in CODYSSEY.

Scientific team: Henrik Svedang (team leader), Vidar Oresland
